Local Sight Seeing


The Ajanta caves represent the stories of Buddhism spanning from the period between 200 B.C. and 650 A.D. These caves were discovered in the 19th century by some Britishers. There are in all 29 caves which were built by Buddhist monks using simple tools like hammer and chisel. These caves were the retreats of Buddhist monks who taught and performed rituals in the Chaityas and Viharas, the ancient seats of learning. The elaborate and exquisite sculptures and paintings depict stories from Jataka tales.


The Ellora Caves are fascinating and the finest example of cave temple architecture housing elaborate facades and exquisite interiors. These were carved during 350 A.D. to 700 A.D. the structures represent the three faiths of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. These 34 caves are located 29 km from Aurangabad. The 12 caves to the south are Buddhist, the 17 in the centre dedicated to Hinduism, and the 5 caves to the north are Jain. Undoubtedly, the rock-cut monuments at Ajanta and Ellora are the prime attraction for people visiting Aurangabad. Both the architectural marvels figure on the World Heritage list.


Bibi Ka Maqbara is the tomb of Begum Rabia Durani, wife of Emperor Aurangzeb. The monument is an excellent example of Persian Architecture. The tomb was designed by Ata-ullah, an architect, and constructed by Hanspat Rai, an engineer. The marble used in its construction is said to have been brought from the mines situated near the 'Pink City'. The arched alcove surmounted by a swelling dome, the idea had acquired its own reputation in India. Bibi Ka Maqbara is considered to be an imitation of Taj Mahal of Agra.


Panchakki (Water Wheel) takes its name from the mill that, in its days, was considered a marvel of engineering. It was built during the early years of the 17th century. The mill used to grind grains for the pilgrims. It was so designed that it generated energy through water which was brought from a spring on a mountain. Driven by water brought through earthen pipes from the river 6km away, the mill once ground grain for pilgrims. The mill itself is to the right of the first tank as you enter. It is also the shrine of a saint, Baba Shah Musafir.


Almost 800 years ago, Daulatabad, then called 'Devigiri' was a thriving city. It was founded by Bhillamraja of the Yadava dynasty in 1187 AD. Later, the fort of Daulatabad passed through the hands of several dynasties in the Deccan. Less than 150 years after the Yadava dynasty, Daulatabad also became the capital of India for a short period during the reign of Sultan Muhammad-bin-Tughluq, who gave the city its present name.


Khultabad is the tomb of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, situated at Khultabad, a city in Aurangabad at Maharashtra state, India. Khultabad is an important religious centre due to its abode to two of the most revered Muhammaden saints namely, Burhan-ud-din and Zain-ud-din.


The Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the ancient and holiest shrines of India. This temple is the holy abode of one of the 12 jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The temple is located at a distance of 11km from Daulatabad near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. Daulatabad was once known as Devagiri. Ahilyabhai Holkar constructed the Grishneshwar Temple, who also re-constructed the Kasi Viswanatha temple at Banaras and the Vishnu Paada temple at Gaya.


Paithan is a village located 56 km south of Aurangabad. It is the ancient capital of Satavahanas. The hamlet is famous for its 6 yards silk brocade sarees. The name of the saree is also Paithan.
